Mathematical DiscourseOrchestrating Discussions in the Secondary Classroom
Math Discourse in the Secondary Classroom is a course that promotes discussions centered around mathematical tasks, computation and vocabulary. These components provide for class discussions that allow students to talk and write in such a way that they reveal their mathematical understanding of concepts through reasoning and debate. By orchestrating math discourse, participants will see how students share ideas and clarify understandings, develop convincing arguments regarding why and how things work, develop a language for expressing mathematical ideas, and learn to see things from other people’s perspective. In addition, they will learn how to establish a classroom culture that promotes rich discussions by setting ground rules using a variety of talk moves. Participants will also learn how to facilitate and guide students in several formats including whole and small group discussions through the facilitator modeling and video examples of research-based teaching practices.

The following standards are addressed: MCC7.SP.5; MCC7.SP.6; MCC7.SP.7; MCC7.SP.7a, b; MCC7.SP.8a, b, c.
The following Mathematical Practices are addressed:
MP2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Students’ reason about the numerical values used to represent probabilities as values between 0 and 1.
MP3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Students approximate probabilities and create probability models and explain reasoning for their approximations. They also question each other about the representations they create to represent probabilities.
MP4. Model with mathematics. Students model real world populations using mathematical probability representations that are algebraic, tabular or graphic.
