The Literacy Design Collaborative design team provides template tasks that give teachers a way to create strong, challenging teaching tasks across disciplines. Each of the templates incorporates Common Core reading and writing standards. This template task collection supports all three writing types specified by the Common Core State Standards (argumentation, informational or explanatory text, narrative text) and provides opportunities for work with nine text structures.
To begin, a teacher identifies important content knowledge to add to the template. Combining the template with the teacher’s expertise quickly produces a robust assignment for students that develop reading, writing and thinking skills. The assignments generally take students two to four weeks to complete. Based on Richard Elmore and his colleagues’ research that “task predicts performance,” LDC tasks are designed to lift student work to substantially higher levels.
